The Problem: Your AI Is Guessing
When you paste an error message into Claude Code and ask "why is this API returning 403?", the AI does its best—but it's working blind. It can't see what headers your app actually sent, what the server actually responded with, or whether the issue is in your code or some middleware layer you forgot about.
The AI is reasoning from static code. It doesn't have eyes on the live network.

Workflow Overview

The typical debugging loop looks like this:
- Reproduce the issue (run your app, trigger the failing request)
- Ask your AI agent to query the session via MCP
- AI inspects request/response details and reasons about the cause
- AI proposes a fix with full context
No copy-pasting curl commands. No manual log-grepping. The AI reads the traffic directly.
Scenario 1: API Returns 403 — Let the AI See the Request
Situation: Your app gets a 403 from a third-party API and you have no idea why. The docs say the auth header should work.
Without MCP: You paste your code into Claude, it suggests checking the API key format, maybe the header name. You try a few things.
With MCP: Tell Claude to look at what was actually sent:
Look at the most recent sessions filtered by status 403.
Check the exact request headers for Authorization and Content-Type.
Compare them to what the API docs require.
Claude will call httpeep_sessions_list with { "status_gte": 403, "status_lte": 403, "limit": 5 }, then httpeep_session_detail on the failing request, and tell you: "The Authorization header is using Token prefix but the API expects Bearer."
Real evidence. Immediate answer.
Scenario 2: Third-Party SDK Behavior Analysis
Situation: You're integrating an analytics SDK and it's making unexpected network calls. You want to understand what data it's sending before going to production.
Prompt:
The analytics SDK just initialized. List all sessions from the last 2 minutes,
group them by hostname, and summarize what data each endpoint receives.
Flag any that send PII fields like email, device_id, or user_id.
Claude will scan the session list, look at request bodies, and give you a structured summary:

Scenario 3: Performance — Which API Is Slowest?
Situation: Your app feels slow on the dashboard page. You want to know which backend call is the bottleneck.
Prompt:
Check the slow APIs report and identify any requests over 500ms.
For each, show me the URL, method, status, and total duration.
Claude calls httpeep_stats_slow_apis (with threshold_ms: 500) and returns:
Slow requests in the last session:
1. GET /api/v2/reports/summary — 1,840ms (status 200)
2. POST /api/v2/analytics/query — 923ms (status 200)
3. GET /api/v1/user/preferences — 512ms (status 200)
Recommendation: /api/v2/reports/summary is likely doing a full table scan.
Check if the `date_range` parameter has an index.
One prompt. Actionable performance data.
Scenario 4: DNS Override and Environment Switching
Situation: You want to test against a staging server without changing your app's config. Or you need to reproduce a production bug that only happens on the real domain.
Prompt:
Create a DNS override that routes api.myapp.com to 10.0.1.45 (staging server).
Then run my test suite and show me what happens to the auth requests.
Claude calls httpeep_dns_upsert_global_host to add the override, then after your tests run, httpeep_sessions_list filtered to api.myapp.com to report what happened.
When you're done:
Remove the DNS override for api.myapp.com and confirm it's cleared.
Environment switching without touching a single config file.

Writing Better Prompts for Network Debugging
The quality of the AI's analysis depends on how you frame the prompt. Here are patterns that work well:
Be specific about time windows:
Look at sessions from the last 30 seconds — I just triggered the failing request.
Ask for comparisons:
Compare the headers in the last successful 200 response vs the most recent 401.
What changed?
Request structured output:
List all POST requests to /api/* in the last session as a table:

Reference specific sessions:
Session ID abc123 failed with a 500. Get the full detail including request body,

Best Practices
Keep sessions scoped: Use httpeep_sessions_list filters (host, status, method) to narrow down to relevant traffic. Don't ask the AI to scan thousands of sessions—be specific.
Use the events stream for real-time work: When you're actively debugging, httpeep_events_poll gives the AI a live feed of new requests. Useful for "watch what happens when I click this button."
Respect data sensitivity: HTTPeep's MCP has built-in data masking for Authorization headers and other sensitive fields by default. Check httpeep_mcp_get_settings to review the current masking configuration before sharing sessions with an AI.
Combine with replay: Found a failing request? Use httpeep_session_replay to re-run it with modified headers or body, then compare the result—all without leaving your AI conversation.
Bookmark useful session IDs: When you find a session that represents the bug clearly, note its ID. You can reference it in follow-up prompts even after more traffic has come in.
